Lucas Ackerman, 33, was arrested under suspicion of DUI after the vehicle he was driving hit pedestrians on Highway 34 following a Fourth of July fireworks show in Grand Lake, according to Fox 31 in Denver. Ackerman, a female and an unspecified number of children left the fireworks show together around 10:30 p.m. in his white Ford pickup truck. According to the Colorado State Patrol, as it was leaving the show, Ackerman’s truck hit five people who were crossing the highway to leave the show as well.

The five people who were hit included a husband and wife, Greg and Debbie Westley of Estes Park, both 50, and three children. Greg Westley was pronounced dead on the scene. His wife was airlifted to Denver Health with serious injuries. Two of the children, a 19-year-old female and 3-year-old male, were airlifted to Denver Health with serious injuries and the other, a 10-year-old female, was airlifted to Denver Health with minor to moderate injuries. Ackerman and his passengers were not harmed and remained on the scene after the accident.

Nothing is going to bring back the Westleys, but if Lucas Ackerman was indeed driving under the influence, he must be held accountable for his actions.
