Mechanical Malfunction Causes Deadly Runaway Trailer Accident

Mechanical error is to blame for a runaway trailer that killed three adults and four children on May 30 in Truxton, New York. Investigators said the trailer hauling crushed cars broke free from the truck and headed into oncoming traffic, hitting Carino Vanorden’s minivan. The investigators at the scene said there was evidence of Vanorden swerving to miss the trailer, but her attempt was unsuccessful.

Normally, trailers are connected to trucks by a “fifth wheel”, a pin from the trailer fits into the middle of a large piece of metal that is then secured automatically by a locking device on the truck. Investigators are unsure how the malfunction happened, but believe it has something to do with the pin that was holding the trailer in place causing the automatic lock to not properly secure the trailer.
