When Colorado Springs police officers responded to an automobile accident late Wednesday night, they were expecting a regular accident. When they arrived at the scene, they got more than they bargained for.
The accident occurred at the intersection of Airport Road and South Chelton when a car, driven by Mahogany Aviles, was hit by another car while executing a turn. Aviles, 27, was traveling east on Airport Road, without headlights, when she attempted the turn that caused the accident.
When police arrived on the scene they discovered that in addition to having two children in her car, she also had almost 50 pounds of marijuana. The children were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident and were lucky to emerge uninjured. Aviles was also uninjured but was taken into custody, along with the marijuana. Aviles faces several traffic charges. She also faces child abuse charges and has been charged with felony distribution of marijuana.
The driver of the other vehicle has not been identified.
