What Dangers Do Semi-Trucks Pose to Our Area?

Semi-trucks and tractor trailers pose an interesting problem for the peoples of Colorado, Nebraska and Wyoming. These large vehicles, often carrying several tons of cargo, are essential to our economies, yet on the road they can be particularly dangerous to other drivers. Add in the fact that our area is full of winding, steep roads that cut through mountains, and harsh weather conditions, and you have a recipe for disaster. Here are just a few of the incidents caused by semi-trucks in our area.

How Dangerous Are Accidents Involving Semi-Trucks?

In Omaha, Nebraska, a truck carrying produce crashed into an apartment building. The vehicle first collided with a garage and then backed into a corner on the side of the apartment building. Then the driver drove off into the night only to be pulled over by authorities not far from the crash. Luckily, no one was hurt during this crash, but property damage and scattered fruit have left neighbors rattled by the strange trucking incident.

In Fort Collins, Colorado, a 19-year old was driving his Ford Ranger along eastbound Harmony Road when a tractor trailer took a left-hand turn from the westbound lane. The two vehicles collided almost head-on sending the drivers of both vehicles to the hospital with various injuries. Amazingly no one was killed in this crash, but others have not been so fortunate.

The massive loads being towed by semi-trucks combined with their rate of travel often makes any collision with them deadly. Factor in the tight deadlines and often grueling shifts these drivers take on, and you could find yourself in a deadly situation before you can blink.

Tips to Avoid Truck Accidents:

  • Always try to be aware of these gigantic vehicles when you are out on the open road.
  • Give yourself plenty of following distance when behind a truck, and try not to spend a significant amount of time driving beside a semi-truck.
  • Also, be careful not to cut one of these vehicles off, their massive size makes it difficult for these trucks to stop.
  • If you do wind up in a crash involving a tractor trailer, contact the authorities, take lots of photos and call an experienced truck accident attorney.
